HALAL FOOD INDUSTRIES plc — ETHIOPIA.

Introduction 
(HFI plc) is an export Abattoir, established in 2013 by a Pakistan based business Group on a 10‐acre piece of prime land. HFI plc is situated 70 km from Addis Ababa on Addis – Adama Expressway near Modjo exit on asphalt road. The 40,000Sq. Mtrs land is acquired from regional  Oromia government on a 40‐year renewable lease. The land lease money is fully paid for 40 years. HFI plc started operations in May 2014. It currently slaughters and exports Goat meat to Various Middle  Eastern countries.   Abattoir is a state of the art facility, designed by Turkish and Chinese experts. It has lots of  space/capacity to expand.

Supply of Animals.
Ethiopia is agriculture based country with largest Goat and Sheep population of Africa. Moreover, it  also boasts a large population of Cattles and Camels. All these animals are purely organic – fed on  natural grass.  

Ethiopian government is taking steps to curb the export of live animals, so that export of meat and other  value added items can be increased. So the supply of animals is ample, and expected to remain that way  for the foreseeable future. 

Present Market Demand

It is known that there is huge shortage of food in Middle Eastern countries and these states are trying to  manage food security.  
All the Middle Eastern countries, especially UAE and Saudi Arabia are historically importing from  Pakistan, India, Australia and Brazil. The Australian meat/beef cater high end market but the majority of  the residents of Middle Eastern countries prefer Pakistani and Indian meat. Pakistan and India are  unable to fulfill the demand for various reasons and hence trade at a high price of about US 7.75/ Kg  C&F in UAE and KSA by air.

Ethiopian meat is very close in quality and taste to meat coming from Pakistan and India, and the price is  about 25% cheaper. Due to significant gap in price, most of the market sells Ethiopian meat instead of  Pakistani meat. Ethiopian Export is about 1600 tons of meat on monthly bases to Middle East.

HFI Plc Current Capacity:
The present capacity of Abattoir is about 3,000 head of goat / sheep per day which can be extended.
HFI plc is first Abattoir in Ethiopia which has three skins removing machines for better removal speed and  skin quality.
HFI plc has three cold rooms of Bitzer brand, with a total chilling capacity of 3,000 carcasses. It also has  two smaller cold rooms for Offal, and a detention cold room.

HFI plc has sufficient availability of ground water, with a reservoir of 300,000 litter capacity. There are two deep drilled water wells, one for normal use and one as spare. The underground water is tested at WHO standard and declared safe for human consumption.
The existing Holding Pan can stock about 8,000 goats and 1,500 Cattles. Lairage has capacity of about 3,000 goats and 500 Cattles.
HFI plc has a waste water treatment plant, with a capacity of 200,000 liters of water per day. The lagoon is also functional.
There is one small laboratory for meat and a first aid clinic for labor. Apart from this, there is also a feed store, and chemicals store located away from the production area. There is also a fully functional workshop, to repair and fabricate spare parts for the factory.
There two Volvo chilled trucks, with capacity of 5.5 ton and 11 ton to transport meat to airport. There is also a service bay for the trucks.

HFI plc is;
Approved export Abattoir by regulatory authority, Ethiopian Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries and Ministry of Agriculture.
Approved by Supreme Oromia Islamic Council for Halal certification. HFI plc also has three certified employees who have are authorized by the council to do Halal slaughter.
Approved by regulatory authority - Ministry of Environment and Water, United Arab Emirates to import Chilled meat and beef.
Approved by regulatory authority – Saudi Food and Drug Authority, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to import Chilled meat.
ISO 22000 – 2005 / HACCP / Food safety Management System certification by ISOQAR in April 2015 and subsequently passed the uninformed audit twice.
